Last Reviews of 2018!

I cannot believe how quickly this year went by! Here are my last two reviews of the year! Thank you for sticking with me, and happy reading lovelies!

A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer

RATING: 5/5 ⭐

Quick phrase to describe this one: A bold fairytale fantasy.

I absolutely loved this story. The lush fictional landscape was well written, and the details were great. The fairytale storyline was engaging, and the elements followed the famous tale. The plot was fairly fast-paced, which I appreciated, and had a variety of action, romance, and heartbreak.

The characters were great to read about. I like the changes in perspectives, and raw emotion from each individual. Harper's kindness was a contrast to Rhen's bold personality. I liked Harper's character because she was relatable, confident, and did not let her cerebral palsy define her. Rhen and Harper had interactions that were enjoyable to read about, despite being in a desperate situations throughout the novel.

Overall, I know this will be a popular book among YA fantasy fans, and I can't wait for the next in the series!

Airports, Exes, and Other Things I'm Over by Shani Petroff

RATING: 4/5 ⭐

This story follows high school senior Sari, as she deals with heartbreak over her cheating (ex)boyfriend.  To make matters worse, she is then stuck with him for hours in the airport after a cancelled flight home from spring break. This quick read was fun and carefree. It was enjoyable, and the characters were easy to follow. Sari's personality was realistic and I liked the touches regarding her passion for music. The plot was simple, but also relatable for many high school readers. It was simple and cute, a typical sweet contemporary!

2019 ARC Reviews

Hey lovelies! Hope you are enjoying some holiday festivities! Here are my two most recent ARC reviews:

FOUR DEAD QUEENS by Astrid Scholte

RATING: 4.75/5 stars

This is one of my most anticipated novels of 2019, and it did not disappoint. The story was interesting, and the murderous plot kept the suspense high. The unique writing style, especially in regards to the time frame of the chapters, took a bit to get used to, but offered the opportunity to understand the perspectives of a variety of characters.

The different characters were engaging, and I liked the different personalities. Some had monstrous motives, some had a shadow of guilt overlaying their every move, and others were merely trying to survive. The diverse elements were done well, and the small romantic pieces were just enough to soften this deadly tale.

Finally, THAT ENDING THOUGH. Extremely well done, and I cannot wait for everyone to read this one! Highly recommend!

IF YOU'RE OUT THERE by Katy Loutzenhiser

RATING: 4.5/5 stars

This contemporary with a suspenseful flair was much better than expected! The characters, especially Zan, were relatable, and easy to connect with. I loved the concept of the story, and the social media use was a clever touch in this novel. The writing style was simple to read and despite starting slow, the story picked up quickly.

Logan was probably my favourite character in this one, the way he interacted with is family and Zan was heartwarming. I liked his story line, in terms of his past, and his personality. Zan's family was also enjoyable to read about, and the diverse elements were well written.  The mystery solving elements I liked most, it kept the story engaging. The ending was intense and wrapped up nicely. Overall, it was much better than I expected, and for fans of bold contemporary novels, I recommend this one!

ARC Review: Bloodleaf by Crystal Smith

Thank you to the Raincoast Books team for an ARC of Bloodleaf by Crystal Smith in exchange for an honest review!

RATING: 4.5/5 stars

REVIEW:

Princess Aurelia is a strong character, who strives for justice across the kingdom, despite being hunted for her blood magic abilities. After fleeing to safety, she discovers a happiness she never had in the castle. But she is not safe for long as a terrible plot is unfolding, and she must choose between saving herself, and the kingdom. This book was one of my most anticipated books of 2019, and it definitely lived up to my expectations. With royalty, secrets, and a revolution, it encompassed some of my favourite fantasy tropes and created a brilliant twisting tale.

The grim fantasy world was well-written, and with a fast paced plot it will hook readers from the beginning. The twist and turns throughout are surprising, offering suspense and mystery. With betrayals, murders, and more, it can be a touch gruesome, but it was bold and added to the uniqueness of this novel. The strong characters I loved, adding to the plot with genuine personalities and dangerous secrets.

The conclusion was my favourite part - a mixture between heartwarming, heartbreaking, and haunting. Absolutely adored this one, and cannot wait for other readers to enjoy it!

ARC Review: We Set the Dark on Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia

Happy Friday friends!

I finished my first read of the month, We Set the Dark on Fire by Tehlor Kay Mejia, featured on the left of the picture - and I loved it!

RATING: 4.5/5 stars

REVIEW:

Fantasy, Feminism, Freedom.

This bold story follows Dani, a top ranked Primera married to an influential politic's son. After being approached to become a spy for a strong resistance group, she begins questioning where her loyalties lie, and with who.

I absolutely loved the characters in this novel. Dani was strong willed and does her best to find the most promising version of herself. Carmen is another smart character, while Mateo and Sota are both holding a variety of secrets to keep their powerful positions.

In terms of the story, it had a great blend of action, romance, and suspense. The diverse characters were written very well, and the spy elements kept readers engaged. The unique dystopian backdrop completed the story line, with a dominant society with upper class individuals ruling most of the island, resulting in uproar and riots from those not inside the exclusive area.

As Dani begins working both sides, her loyalties begin to blur, and the dangers around her only increase. Overall, I highly recommend this novel when it releases in February!

Special thank you to the HCC Frenzy team for sending it my way!

November Reviews: Heart of Thorns & Mirage

Hi everyone, long time no chat eh?!

I'm here with my last October read and my first two November reads, both I flew through and thoroughly enjoyed.

The Supervillain and Me by Danielle Banas (October 26th): 4.5/5

This one really surprised me - it was cute, fun, and the action was just enough. It had the elements of a light contemporary - the high school drama and bantering, but the action - my favourite part was the intense scene near the end, was what really drew me in.

The characters were easy to follow and the plot was engaging. I think readers will be pleasantly surprised with this one. I liked all of the characters and found them relatable. At times I found the plot to be a bit predictable, but overall it was a fun read.

Heart of Thorns by Bree Barton (finished November 4th): 4.5/5

Having seen this quite frequently when it first came out, it had been on my shelf for a while, and I finally picked it. And it was SO good. The intricate magical world laced with the complex characters really impressed me. There were diverse characters, royalty, and mystery throughout. I liked the main characters and found Mia's travels to be a good mix of action and suspense with self discovery. She is a strong girl, and not about to be a spoiled princess locked in a tower, forced in a marriage she does not want. There were plot twists throughout, with a conclusion that was full of surprises. The mixed reviews had me a bit concerned, but it was a pleasant surprise. There was also a cliff hanger tending hat enticed me to read the next one. Overall, I loved it.

Mirage by Somaiya Daud (finished November 6th): 4.5/5

This one has been on my TBR since it first released and I am glad it lived up to the hype. It is a science fiction story of royalty, romance, and betrayal, beginning a new fast-paced series. The outer space elements and languages were a bit confusing, but it was fun to have the space elements.

The forbidden love parts were my favourite. The chemistry between Amani and Idris was strong and their secret moments were very well written. Each character was strong in their beliefs in roles that they had little choice in. Royalty in novels are an aspect I am always drawn towards, and this one did not disappoint either. I also loved the rebellious characteristics of Amani, and her strong sense of self.

Definitely will be reading the next one, and keeping my fingers crossed that Idris and Amani can find a way to be together.

Review: Unclaimed Baggage by Jen Doll

Good morning! Today I am sharing my review for Unclaimed Baggage by Jen Doll - which was a pleasant surprise!

RATING: 4.75/5

I absolutely loved this novel! It was different than I expected, but it was a pleasant surprise.

I found the characters refreshing, and the challenges they faced were realistic. Each experienced growth in their own way throughout the story and overcame periods of racism, guilt, and hardship, resulting in a new positive sense of identity.

I was impressed with the variety of characters, and their different points of view shared insight on the emotions they have. They shared an inside perspective to different cultures, stereotypes, and how to handle racism and abuse. It was a bolder story than I expected, and it was executed very well.

The atmosphere at the Unclaimed Baggage store is one of my favourite parts. It was fun, and exciting to see the unique items, and Red was a great boss. It was engaging to hear their ideas of the story behind each item or suitcase they found.

Overall, I really loved it and would recommend it to any contemporary fan.

Thank you Raincoast books for the review copy in exchange for my honest opinion!

ARC Review: Beneath the Citadel by Destiny Soria

Good afternoon lovelies

I am here with a review of my recent read, Beneath the Citadel by Destiny Soria! This dark and magical story was a blend of Six of Crows and dark magic, and I was surprised how much I really liked it.

Rating: 4.5/5

Review:

This novel is a dark tale following five main characters and their attempt to overthrow the current government, continuing the rebellion that their parents had worked hard to start. The POV's switch to each character, and are rotated between present and past situations. That writing method I found a bit annoying at first, but it truly keeps the reader engaged as they want to find out what happens next.

My favourite character was Cassa. She was determined to finish off the Citadel council, just like how the council killed her parents 4 years ago. Her perseverance was evident throughout, but she also made incredible sacrifices. Evander was the other character I really liked. His relationships kept him going throughout, and he was a true fighter.

I loved the setting in this novel. The differing wards for each status level were described well. The prisons were dark and menacing, and the inside of the citadel had a feeling of forgotten royalty. The twists and turns in the novel were also very well done. With the varying characters each wanting something slightly different, readers did not who to trust, and it kept them guessing to the end. I found the beginning a bit slow, the changing POV's made it difficult to connect to a character. However, it picked up in the middle and the ending was heartbreaking but beautiful.

ARC Review: An Assassin's Guide to Love & Treason

Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of finishing An Assassin's Guide to Love & Treason by Virginia Boecker. It was so enjoyable, funny, and the historical elements were executed very well.

Rating: 4.5/5 ⭐

- Thank you HBG Canada for the review copy, in exchange for an honest review -

"Phillipa Gregory meets Mr. & Mrs. Smith"

A historical story set in the 1600's, that follows a royal spy and an vengeful orphan, the first working to uncover a plot to assassinate Queen Elizabeth, the other carrying out the plan. The novel features a variety of bold and diverse characters, appearances from Shakespeare himself, and learning about sacrifices one can make for love.

I absolutely adored this novel. Katherine was a lady who found her identity throughout the novel, despite playing many roles. After being disguised as Kit, she found strength in herself, empowering her to be more than just a pretty face. She was an easy character to relate too and her determination was easy for a reader to root for. I liked her fierceness and it was clear she wanted to make a difference in the world. Toby was another great character. He was passionate and humorous. In the end, he lets his heart lead him to where he needs to be, and I am glad his numerous years of loyalty paid off.

The historical elements really let this novel stand out. With true individuals from history, including poets, royal advisers, and members from the 1605 Gunpowder Plot, it felt very real and the story immerses readers into the complicated era of the 17th century. Having one of Shakespeare's plays, Twelfth Night, be a prominent part of this novel made it amusing and I thoroughly enjoyed reading about the Globe, the actors, and the area. The setting of this novel truly made it special, and I hope it stands to other releases this month.

Overall, I recommend this one to fans of star-crossed lovers, murderous plots, and unique twists that will surprise readers.

From New York Times bestselling author Megan Shepherd, Grim Lovelies is an epic and glittering YA fantasy. Prepare to be spellbound by the world of Grim Lovelies, where secrets have been long buried, friends can become enemies, and everything—especially humanity—comes at a price.

Q & A with Megan:

Kat: Would you want Grim Lovelies to become a movie? Why or Why not?

Megan: Of course! I’d love to see it on the big or little screen. My publisher designed a book trailer for it that is so gorgeous it leaves me dying to see what a live-action trailer would look like. The book has lots of action scenes, shots of Paris, and magical elements. It could make a very fun visual experience.

My Review:

Rating: 3.75/5 ⭐

Grim Lovelies is a haunting story following Anouk, an animal brought to life, called Beasties, to serve a high class witch. After her mistress is found dead and Anouk is suspected to be guilty, she and her fellow Beasties flee. With an underground magical society known as the Haute chasing them, these dark creatures only have three days to find the real killer before the spell keeping them human fades away.

The concept of this novel intrigued me the most. The enchantment of animals to humans is a magical and unique idea for a story. I like the significance of the pelts for Anouk and the other Beasties, and their 3 day timeline created urgency and suspense.

The variety of characters in Grim Lovelies was well done. I liked Anouk's, in a couple of ways she reminded me of myself. Cricket's character however was my favourite. She was strong and bold, and I like her spunky attitude. She made the story amusing and enjoyable! Beau was okay, but at times could be a bit pushy. His protective attitude of Anouk was sweet though, and the last scene in the book was heartbreaking for me. In the next book I hope for more scenes and interactions with Prince Rennar. His character was my second favourite, and I would like to see more of his intentions with the Beasties.

However, I found parts of this book very slow and choppy. There were moments that seemed to come out of nowhere, leading to a disconnect from the story. Scenes seemed rushed and out of place at times. These parts might have been fixed for the finished copy, but unfortunately, it really impacted my enjoyment of the novel.

The ending of the story, approx. the last quarter of the novel, was my favourite part. I am glad the novel picked pace. It was bold and emotional, and will entice readers to reading the conclusion, Midnight Beauties, when it releases.

ARC Review: For a Muse of Fire by Heidi Heilig

Happy Release Day to For a Muse of Fire by Heidi Heilig!

I received an ARC of this one from Harper Collins Canada (HCC Frenzy) in exchange for an honest review!

My rating: 4/5 stars

My thoughts:
'For a Muse of Fire' is a bold tale about family, honour, and sacrifice. Jetta's family are shadow players, and one of the best, thanks to her. Jetta's unique ability to see souls of the dead allow her to blood bind them to their dazzling puppets. As danger draws closer, her family seeks out refuge aboard on a royal ship to Aquitan, and closer to a possible cure. The plan becomes difficult when loyalties become less clear, and not everyone is who they claim to be.

There were a lot of things about this book that I really liked. The concept was dark and wicked, drawing readers in as the complex plot continued. The bold Asian fantasy world was historically rich and well described. The multiple points of view and unique writing style were interesting (first person narrative as well as play writing style), and I liked hearing from the various characters thoughts. The beginning of the novel is an immersion in the rich culture and unfamiliar phrases, and that took a bit to get accustomed too. It might appear intimidating and a bit confusing to some , but I am glad I continued. The finished copy seems to have maps and folklore graphics throughout the novel that the ARC had left spaces for, and that will be beneficial to readers.

Leo's character is my favourite in the novel. His charm and compassion make him easy to like, and his desire to help is clear. I would've liked to get to know him more, but that might come in the next books in the series. Jetta's character was a bit harder to support in the beginning. I found it harder to connect with the story, but later on it improved - once there was more backstory shared about her. I am excited to learn more about Theodora and Cheeky in the series, they have the potential to be very impactful individuals.

Overall, the slow start led way to a great fantasy novel with a strong heroine. Fans of dark, twisted fantasies will appreciate the necromancy aspects, and the bold characters will draw readers in.

Thanks for reading, and feel free to check this one out at your local bookstore!

This is my first bookish scarf, and I cannot wait to wear it. The feather pin was another goodies included and it is absolutely stunning. Finally, the book, Ignite the Stars - which is a fast paced sci-fi adventure. The reviews already excellent, and it has moved to the top of my TBR!

Blog Tour: Ghost Road by Charis Cotter

Good morning everyone! Today I'm sharing Ghost Road by Charis Cotter, in partner with Penguin Teen Canada.

Tour Schedule:

Book details:
Ghost Road by Charis Cotter
Publication date: September 4th 2018
Genres: Middle Grade, Mystery, Historical

Synopsis:

Ghosts, a family curse, buried secrets -- and two girls who have to figure it all out. A new book from an acclaimed author, for fans of Coraline, Doll Bones and The Night Gardener.

For the first time, Ruth is heading to Newfoundland to stay with family she's never met instead of spending the summer traveling with her dad. When she arrives, she finds Newfoundland is very different from her life in Toronto--people there are much more friendly, but also superstitious, believing in ghosts and The Sight and family curses. Ruth's cousin Ruby is also staying for the summer, and the two discover they have a lot in common: they both lost their moms when they were two years old, they're the same age and they even like the same food. But while Ruby believes in spirits and fairies, Ruth believes in science and cold, hard facts.

When they find ominous information on some tombstones in the local cemetery, Ruth and Ruby start investigating their family's past and discover that twin girls are born in every generation, and every set of twins dies young, leaving their children without mothers. What's more, one of the twins always has The Sight and can see the Ghost Road that leads to the mysterious lost settlement of Slippers Cove. What happened there? What does it have to do with their family? And who is the ghostly presence that keeps visiting Ruth late at night?

The answers lie somewhere along the Ghost Road . . . if they can only find it.

AUTHOR BIO:

Charis Cotter is a writer, editor and storyteller living in Newfoundland. She grew up in Cabbagetown and Parkdale in downtown Toronto. After taking a degree in English at Glendon College, York University, she went on to study acting at The Drama Studio in London, England. After several years as an actor, she moved into publishing, where she has been working as a freelance editor and writer for more than 20 years.

My Personal Review: 4.75/5 ⭐

Set in 1970’s Newfoundland, Ghost Road is a spooky middle grade tale by Canadian author Charis Cotter. Ruth’s first adventure to the east coast is full of dark secrets, ghost stories, and a curse threatening her family.

Despite being a middle grade novel, it had a well developed complex plot and was full of suspense. I loved the detailed family  history, and the villainous curse that followed the members for generations was a great mystery. Readers will be engaged throughout the story as Ruth works to handle the mysterious occurrences around the town, and piece together what truly causes the set of twins every generation to die young. The author also writes at a quality middle grade level, that will appeal to older readers. The dialogue was simplified a bit due to the target audience and historical time period, but it flowed well and the plot twists were excellent.

Ruth’s character is well written, and it’s heartwarming to see her grow throughout the book. Her structured city girl character is tested in the rural outskirts of town, she learns how to live like the rest of family - on the farm, helping in the house, and other activities.

Overall I adored Ghost Road. The concept was unique and it was to easy to read. I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of mysterious middle grade reads!

ARC Reviews: Wicked King by Holly Black & Rule by Ellen Goodlett

Good morning lovelies! I have two very exciting reviews to share with you, of two of the biggest upcoming YA releases:

Wicked King by Holly Black

If you know me, then you would know how much I ADORED The Cruel Prince by Holly Black - the fantasy realm, the bold and ruthless main characters, and the hint of a brewing love story all contributed to make it one of my favourite books of the year. This past month I had the incredible opportunity to review the second in the series, and here's what I thought:

* received an ARC from publisher in exchange for honest review *

RATING: 4.5/5 stars

The Wicked King starts out about 5 months into Carden's reign under Jude's control, and the dark powers of the Faerie Realm are still as prominent as before. Jude has new challenges to face as enemies emerge, and not everyone is as trustworthy as they claim.

I will admit, the first part of the book I found slower, a bit less engaging than I expected. It was important to develop new characters in that time, but I was hoping for a more fast paced plot. As the novel continued, my thoughts changed completely as the situations became more intense, and threats became more serious.

My favourite part about The Wicked King was the never-ending plot twists. The betrayals were unexpected and abundant, each more dangerous than the next. They added so much suspense, hooking readers and pulling them into the story. The emotions of heartbreak and surprise after each devious decision were raw and genuine with the characters, and the descriptions for each were written with grit and passion.

Jude's character disappointed me a bit in this book. Her impulsive actions seemed immature for her ruthless nature, and her decision making was rushed. However, I grew more fond of Carden as the story continued. He becomes more than just a pretty face as his complex character grows, especially in the second half of the book. As his reign continues, he becomes bolder, and more sure of his actions, transitioning into a daring leader.

Finally, just when readers think that they will survive this novel, *BOOM*, a massive cliffhanger ending forcing another agonizing wait to find out what happens next. Well done Ms. Holly Black, you've done it again.

Rule by Ellen Goodlett

* received an ARC from publisher in exchange for honest review *

RATING: 4.75/5 stars

For fans of Three Dark Crowns, and Pretty Little Liars, I highly recommend this title. This fast paced fantasy with a murdeous mix was engaging and bold from the first page. With deadly secrets threatening to expose them, Ren, Zofi, and Akeylah must quickly learn who is an ally, and who is just out for royal blood.

The main characters were one of my favourite parts of Rule. Each character's POV was unique and well written, describing different traits and ways of thinking that reflect that character. I loved the variety of upbringings that each sister had experienced, leading them to have all different perceptions about the future of Kolonya and the other Reaches. There are not often diverse characters in fantasy novels, so it was great to read about.

The setting was a bold fantasy land with a violent history. I love the differing terrain in each outer Reach, and along with that, the unique ways of life. With the threat of rebel forces forming, there were various moments of suspense and anticipation in the novel, increasing the anticipation for readers. Finally, an intense cliffhanger ending will keep readers eagerly awaiting the next book - I know I am excited for the next now!

The noble court is a difficult social game to master, and these three newly crowned princesses learn just how far some members are willing to go.

Thank you HBG Canada for the review copies!

Podcast: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/the-girls/id1413420595?mt=2

AUTHOR BIO:

Courtney Summers was born in Belleville, Ontario, Canada in 1986 and currently resides in a small town not far from there. At age 14, and with her parents' blessing, Courtney dropped out of high school to pursue her education independently. At age 18, she wrote her first novel and never looked back. Her first book, Cracked Up to Be, was published in 2008, when she was 22. To date, she has authored five novels and is best known for her unapologetic, difficult female protagonists. In 2016, Courtney was named one of Flare Magazine's 60 under 30.

I also had the incredible opportunity to ask Ms. Summers an interview question:

Katelin: Would you want Sadie to become a movie? Why or Why not?

Courtney: It would be awesome if Sadie became a movie! I always think it’s incredibly cool to see how one story translates across different mediums and what kind of vision another artist will bring to it. The Sadie audiobook is an example of this—it’s got a full cast, sound effects, musical cues, the works. It’s an entirely new way of looking at the novel and I just think that’s wonderful thing. A movie would be a new way of looking at Sadie too, one I’d love to see.

My Personal Review: 4.75/5 ⭐

WOW. This book was bold from the first page. Courtney's unique writing style led me to become so invested in Sadie's story, I could not put this book down. Told in alternating points of view, readers first learn the present day struggles of those left behind as radio show host, West McCray, investigates the Sadie's disappearance. Then perspectives shift, and readers experience Sadie's emotions in first person what happened that dreadful period, about a year ago.

The raw emotions and hatred that pushed Sadie to keep going throughout this novel was well written and truly made readers understand her persistence. She used the people she loathed as motivation, travelling far and wide to seek the truth that has haunted her since the night her sister disappeared. The secrets that she brings to light ultimately help her succeed in her attempt to bring her sister's murderer to justice.

The ONLY part I was not convinced on was the ambiguous ending. I did love how it wrapped up - the poetic lines pieced together Sadie's emotional journey in a heartfelt but grieving way. However, I do wish there was more details, I prefer solid answers. It does add more suspense to the novel and seems fitting for Sadie's character, but I was looking forward to a more conclusive closing.

I know this book will surprise, impress, and empower readers, and I look forward to its official release!

Keep in mind: I found this novel more suitable for mature readers - warning due to sexual abuse & drugs.

Box Review: August Uppercase Box

Happy Friday friends! As the month ends, I am excited to share my unboxing & review of the August Uppercase Box.

Each month, they offer signed new release YA novels with a small amount of goodies and access to extra features on their site to further connect with readers!

Included in August’s package:

9 3/4 Harry Potter travellers notebook 📓
“You Are a Rare Edition” Cards ♥️
Dance of Thieves sword necklace 🗡
BOOK: Dance of Thieves by @maryepearson (SIGNED) 📖 (The maps in this novel are also stunning!)

Also included was a bookmark featuring codes that unlock a variety of exclusive content to Uppercase readers!

Review
Overall, I couldn't be happier with my experience from the August Uppercase box. The team (especially Melissa) was a pleasure to work with, and always were patient and polite with me (which I greatly appreciate). The bag was mailed in a plastic envelope to avoid tears or weather damage, perfect for unpredictable weather year round. My package was in the mailbox for a day, and the envelope kept it clean and safe.

Now for the fun stuff - a.k.a. the GOODIES! Having seen photos from friends and fellow Uppercase subscribers, I knew the company always chooses highly anticipated new YA releases, and this month's pick was perfect. Mary E. Pearson's Dance of Thieves is a fast paced fantasy set in the same fictional world as her other series, and is already receiving great reviews. I learned afterwards that each month Uppercase works hard to ensure each book is SIGNED, adding extra value to the readers - and I appreciate very much. Along with an exciting novel, each box includes a couple bookish items, a letter explaining the book choice, as well as access to exclusive online content. I loved the artwork on the cards featured in the crate, but my favourite bookish item was definitely the sword necklace! It will compliment lots of outfits, and look cute in photos for all you bookstagrammers.

This online content is unlocked with special codes included in a bookmark that is added in the bag. This author content usually includes a behind-the-scenes video from the author, as well as quizzes, discussions, and other activities for readers to connect and interact. I love the idea of meeting other readers and sharing opinions about the book included that month, and it further increases my excitement about each monthly box from Uppercase.
Keep in mind friends, it is only available in Canada & the U.S.A. currently, but maybe it will expand in the future. Overall, I highly recommend checking out Uppercase Box for Young Adult readers if you enjoy fun new YA releases, high quality items, and interacting online with fellow book lovers.

Thank you to the team for the opportunity to the August crate, and I look forward to working with Uppercase Box in the future!

Recent Reads: ARCs + Book Reviews

Hey again lovelies!

I thought I would share some of my recent reads for the last couple of weeks:

Give the Dark my Love by Beth Revis (July 31st) - 4.25 ⭐

* received an ARC from the publisher exchange for an honest review *

This book really surprised me. After beginning rather slow, the action picked up, the darkness crept in, and Nedra's character truly began to shine. The characters in this novel really impressed me, I found Nedra's development throughout the novel to be engaging, and it became clear where - and who, her priorities lied with. Her strong family loyalties and desire for saving the poor village members that raised her led to her ultimate demise - or led to her rise.

The unique twists and turns really intrigued me, and I was hooked until the last page. I liked the rotating POV's, it made it easier to understand Nedra's and Grey's thoughts and feel their pain. There are some extremely dark elements in this novel, and I personally found them to be a bit too much. However, I am sure that readers who adore bold and dark tales will enjoy this novel very much. I am very excited to read the next in the series.

To All the Boys I've Loved Before Trilogy by Jenny Han (August 3-6th) - 4.5 star ⭐

Such a cute series! I loved the drama, the love story, and the never ending baking. Lara Jean's story is a must read! I finished the last one in one day. I adored it, and thought it was the perfect conclusion to Lara Jean's story. The way Jenny Han writes about high school drama, problems, and relationships was accurate, amusing, and executed beautifully. I should have read this series sooner!

Mammoth by  Jill Baguchinsky (August 9th) - 4.5 ⭐

*Received ARC from publisher in exchange for review*

This novel was so much more than I expected! The bold plus size main character running a fashion + fossils blog was what first caught my eye about this upcoming novel, but once I got into the story, I learned how unique 'Mammoth' was. Readers follow Natalie, a bright and hopeful paleontology intern on a summer term in Austin Texas, as she learns to balance difficult relationships, self confidence, and maybe discover a dinosaur bone or two.

As the novel picked up, I sympathized with Natalie's struggles, from her self consciousness due to her weight, and her amusing mishaps at the dig. The hateful comments and judgemental looks force to hide some of her most beautiful qualities. It is difficult to have the courage to fight back, but Natalie learns to be proud of who she is and embrace her nerdy, crafty qualities. There were many fun science facts that were smoothly added, and even those who are not familiar with paleontology will find engaging. The supporting characters were witty, and added a cute romance flair to the novel.

Overall, I really enjoyed the story, and will be recommending this one to my friends!

Catwoman Soulstealer (August 16th) - 5/5

*received copy from publisher in exchange for review*

Catwoman Soulstealer stole my heart.

Seline's character was so engaging and readers could feel the raw emotion pulsing through her during each heist around Gotham. Her cat and mouse game with Batwing kept the suspense high, and I loved each calculated scheme throughout the novel. Her merciless training never got in the way of ensuring the ones she loved most were safe. There was humour, love, and action, which created a great balance to please most readers. The conclusion was beautiful (in all honesty, I cried at one point) and not at all what I expected, and Selina's true intentions became clear.

Beyond Selina's heroics, Batwing's story was heartwarming and bold. His desire to impress Bruce Wayne, while managing a dangerous game with Catwoman was entertaining, as well as enlightening. The insight into the distraught mind of a war veteran is important to understand, and SJM did an amazing job portraying the suffering and nightmares that follow soldiers home.

Overall, I am so impressed with the novel, it is easiest one of my favourite books of the year!

Review: ARC of Sadie by Courtney Summers

Hello lovelies! I have been reading lots of mystery and suspense books lately, and if those are some of your favourite genres, then I highly recommend reading Sadie when it publishes in early September.

*Thank you Raincoast Books for the book, in exchange for an honest review*

Rating: 4.75/5 ⭐

While some girls may dream of winning a prince’s heart, Delaney just wishes this one would leave her alone. My Personal Review: 4.25/5 ⭐

After the impressive first book, I was hooked on the Xenith trilogy. The setting alone makes this series stand out, with its unique landscapes and bold descriptive language. ‘Between Frost and Fury’ picks up right after the first, and is fast-paced from the first chapter. After being kidnapped by over-confident space prince Trystan, Delaney is forced away from Earth, and her [alien] boyfriend, Ruckus. As the story continues, Delaney must quickly adapt to a range of extra-terrestrial expectations, while maintaining her safety, the safety of her friends, and the safety of the galaxy.

I enjoy reading about Delaney as a character, she is very strong willed and her emotions are relatable. I am glad she maintained such qualities in throughout the book as it is engaging to read about. After the first novel, I was skeptical on Trystan’s character, but as his backstory is revealed in this novel, many readers will understand his reasons, and his true intentions for his planet – and with Delaney. As much as I greatly prefer Ruckus with Delaney instead of Trystan, I am sure that Trystan has won over some readers after how much he endures to keep her happy. I look forward to reading the finale when it releases, and am already recommending this trilogy to many of my friends!

Sometimes its great to have a candle burning while we read, right?!  To help you find some new scents or shops, I have put together a list of some the candle companies I rep for or just highly recommend!

⭐ Click on each shop name to be taken to their store ⭐

This UK based shop is run by two book loving sisters, and includes some of the sweetest fandom candles! Their August special edition box is all about some of the top YA contemporaries, and you do not want to miss out!

RECOMMEND: Lara Jean's Cookies (Sugar, Chocolate Chip Cookies, Baking)

Until the Very End Co.

Those are all such great shops! There are still so many shops I want to support, so I am shopping for my next candles at:

Wildcard by Marie Lu Review

Hello lovelies!

Penguin Teen Canada graciously sent me a copy of Wildcard by Marie Lu (the sequel to Warcross), and I wanted to share my thoughts on it with you guys!

I read the ARC last week and I LOVED IT. I finished it in 2 days, it had me hooked from the first page. Lu's writing style is engaging and fast paced, and fans of Warcross will be pleased with the continuation of plot twists and dark secrets.

The story picks up shortly after the first book ended, and follows Emika Chen as she faces new challenges as she works to dismantle the new NeuroLink algorithm. Her emotions are vividly described, and readers will feel her pain, sadness, and happiness as the novel continues. She joins Zero and the Blackcoats, which leads to more struggles for Emika - and those close to her.

Hideo and Emika's relationship in this novel is one of my favourite plot lines in the novel. The way they feel for each other is evident throughout, creating friction at times and passion at others. Both characters attempt balance their personal goals and their desire to support their partner, further emphasizing the conflicting feelings that they have. I would've preferred a more definitive or explicit conclusion with how their relationship ended, but I am still pleased with the current one.

Jax's character quickly became one of my favourites also. The development around her backstory was rich and complex, pulling readers in further. Her strong attitude and rebellious features are important qualities that ultimately change the path of the story. Sasuke's story also was perfectly tangled in - with added pieces of heartbreak and heartwarming moments that made the story feel real.

Overall, the novel was amazing, and I cannot give Marie Lu and her team enough praise. I am excited to hear other people's reactions once it is released!

Most Recent Reviews!

Hey lovelies! I thought I would share some of my recent reads & reviews with you!
If you read any of these, or would like to chat about them, feel free to comment below or message me 💙

Onyx & Ivory by Mindee Arnett (June 14th) - 4/5 ⭐

I was not sure what to expect from this novel, but I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed it.

After a bit of a slow start in terms of the pace, the characters - especially Kate, became very intriguing, drawing readers into every page. Corwin's and Kate's perspectives were engaging to read about, and it was enjoyable to read about their relationship, and how it was mended throughout the novel. Readers truly felt their emotions, understood their thoughts, and felt their struggles during conflicts. It was also exciting to see a traitor girl save a prince - not a very common plot detail in YA fantasy, and I enjoyed that.

The magical features throughout Rima were some of my favourite parts. These unique and mystical features distinguish this book from other fantasy novels. Wilder's (humans with rogue magical powers) were my personal favourite - each ability was so unique, and fantasy lovers will enjoy the ruthless drakes (dragon-like creatures).

Overall, I am excited to read more by Mindee Arnett, and I cannot wait for the next in the Rime Chronicles series!

Royals by Rachel Hawkins (June 6th) - 4.5/5 ⭐

I absolutely adored this fun novel. The characters were unique, comical, and had quirky elements to each of them. It was enjoyable to read about such a laid back girl (and her American family) become the spotlight in traditional European tabloids. Daisy was strong willed, and determined to not let the Scottish royal lifestyle change her, and I admired her witty humour. The supporting characters were also extremely fun to read about - for example, the 'Royal Wreckers' were always entertaining, adding a flair of comic relief to the story. Furthermore, the strong family ties that Daisy, her sister Ellie, and her parents share keep the close-knit family together throughout the novel.
One of my favourite parts of the book was the setting. The descriptions of Scotland's cities, highlands, and palaces were very well done, and ensured readers were immersed in the story. I found myself easily visualizing how the lush green mountains looked, or grand castles filled with endless trinkets and portraits.

I am big fan of Rachel's writing, and look forward to reading more of her stories. If you are in the mood for a cute, royal romance, I highly recommend!

Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young (May 31st) - 5/5 ⭐

This novel absolutely blew me away. I did not know what to expect from it, but I found Adrienne's writing style engaging, and kept readers on the edge of their seats. The unique setting was described in vivid detail, and added to the story's development.

Eelyn's character is strong willed, determined, and proud of her clan, Aska. Her passion for fighting for herself, and for others, is evident throughout, leading readers to experience her heartfelt emotions firsthand. As she struggles to survive across enemy lines, Eelyn balances trusting Iri - the brother she thought had died, and his companion Fiske, and trusting her heart. With gruesome duels and an action packed plot, readers will be completely immersed in this vibrant Viking world.

From Twinkle, With Love by Sandhya Menon (May 26th) - 4.75/5 ⭐

'From Twinkle, With Love' tells the story of aspiring filmmaker Twinkle, and her journey through her first experiences of love, heartbreak, and how the power of friendship can overcome even the greatest pain.

I absolutely adored this novel, from the characters to the plot, and even the family struggles. Sahil's character was probably my favourite, loyal from the first page, and an honest friend to Twinkle when she needed someone to confide to. When individuals read his point of view, it is a true teenage guy perspective, and made the story feel real.

In terms of Twinkle's development, her growth as a leader, friend, and a person were impressively written.Twinkle's unsteady relationship with her ex-best friend added to the drama she dealt with, but also offered her motivation to keep persevering with the film.  In times of anger, her strong and aggressive outbursts kept the reader engaged and amused, and helped express the raw emotions Twinkle was feeling. As she balanced re-inventing herself, while not losing who she was, Twinkle truly learned what she valued most in life, and who she wanted to be as a person.

The writing style fluctuated between journal entries, text messages, and notes between friends, and that added to the contemporary feeling of the book. This was the first novel I read in this writing form, and was so impressed with it.

Overall, I would highly recommend this novel to young adults, and contemporary fans in general.
