REVIEW: From Twinkle, With Love

Hey lovelies!

I just finished 'From Twinkle, With Love' by Sandhya Menon, and I am extremely happy with it! I graciously received an ARC from Simon & Schuster Canada in exchange for an honest review, and cannot wait to share my opinions on this great story.

RATING: 4.75/5

REVIEW: 'From Twinkle, With Love' tells the story of aspiring filmmaker Twinkle, and her journey through her first experiences of love, heartbreak, and how the power of friendship can overcome even the greatest pain.

I absolutely adored this novel, from the characters to the plot, and even the family struggles. Sahil's character was probably my favourite, loyal from the first page, and an honest friend to Twinkle when she needed someone to confide to. When individuals read his point of view, it is a true teenage guy perspective, and made the story feel real.

In terms of Twinkle's development, her growth as a leader, friend, and a person were impressively written.Twinkle's unsteady relationship with her ex-best friend added to the drama she dealt with, but also offered her motivation to keep persevering with the film.  In times of anger, her strong and aggressive outbursts kept the reader engaged and amused, and helped express the raw emotions Twinkle was feeling. As she balanced re-inventing herself, while not losing who she was, Twinkle truly learned what she valued most in life, and who she wanted to be as a person.

The writing style fluctuated between journal entries, text messages, and notes between friends, and that added to the contemporary feeling of the book. This was the first novel I read in this writing form, and was so impressed with it.

Overall, I would highly recommend this novel to young adults, and contemporary fans in general.

Blog Tour + US Giveaway: Nothing Happened

Hosted by Rockstar Book Tours

About the Book:

Title: NOTHING HAPPENED
Author: Molly Booth
Pub. Date: May 15, 2018
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion
Formats: Hardcover, eBook
Pages: 336
Find it: Goodreads, Amazon, B&N, iBooks, TBD

This modern-day retelling of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing takes place at the idyllic Camp Dogberry, where sisters Bee and Hana Leonato have grown up. Their parents own the place, and every summer they look forward to leading little campers in crafts, swimming in the lake, playing games of capture the flag and sproutball, and of course, the legendary counselor parties.

This year, the camp drama isn’t just on the improv stage. Bee and longtime counselor Ben have a will-they-or-won’t-they romance that’s complicated by events that happened—or didn’t happen—last summer. Meanwhile, Hana is falling hard for the kind but insecure Claudia, putting them both in the crosshairs of resident troublemaker John, who spreads a vicious rumor that could tear them apart.

As the counselors juggle their camp responsibilities with simmering drama that comes to a head at the Fourth of July sparkler party, they’ll have to swallow their pride and find the courage to untangle the truth, whether it leads to heartbreak or happily ever after.

Excerpt from the Novel:

Claudia POV

IT TOOK TWENTY MINUTES to get the fire going, but in the meantime, we got a show: Ben and Bee attempting to start it together.

“Shouldn’t we be building a pyramid?”

“Are you seriously using a lighter?”

“That kindling is green.”

“Back up. Do you want to burn your eyebrows off?”

I thought about helping, but their arguing actually produced a well-constructed campfire.

The island is small, maybe less than half a mile across, and in the middle, there’s a fire pit with log benches circled around. I sat across from Hana, too nervous to attempt sitting next to her. The fire popped, the stars came out, and Donald passed out beers like it was Halloween and we were trick-or-treaters. Bee let him, and then situated the beer cooler in the clumps of bayberry bushes behind us.

“Stop being paranoid!” Donald laughed. “The police are not going to show up on the tiniest island ever in northern Maine and card us.”

That got a laugh from the group. But I kind of understood it. Bee was the camp directors’ kid. She needed to set a good example. Of hiding the alcohol.

Once everyone was settled in around the fire, and the bug spray had been passed around, Bee opened a beer for herself and raised up the can.

“To Camp Dogberry, the most beautiful place in the world.”

A murmur of agreement.

“To old friends returning, new CITs coming—”

“Our fresh crop of servants,” Donald interjected, to a round of cheers.

“And our beloved campers, soon to be here, to make us want to give up and torch the place.”

Another cheer.

“And to summer.” She paused, to look up at the sky. Then she grinned at Hana. “This summer.”

A toast of cans smacking into each other.

Bee was right. We only had one summer. Who knew what would happen after that?

Across the fire, I watched Margo whisper something to Hana. She smiled in reply. Hana didn’t laugh a lot, not unless she was really comfortable. She mostly smiled. Tonight, her dark, curly hair was pulled back from her face and hovered loosely on her shoulders. Her skin was already starting to tan from hours on the water this week. I wanted to run my fingers down her arms, then catch her hands at the bottom.

“Hey, Claudia, can you pass me a beer?”

I looked up. John. I grabbed him a beer from the cooler and another for myself. I opened mine and drank half in one go. I needed to calm down.

Hana, so pretty. So perfect. Calm down.

“Claudia?”

ARC Review: Legendary by Stephanie Garber

Hey lovelies! How about a review about one of the biggest YA sequels of the year!?

Legendary by Stephanie Garber - 4.5/5

- received ARC from publisher in exchange for review -

This is the long awaited sequel to Caraval, and I was so excited to continue the story of the mysterious Legend. And this book definitely lived up the hype.

This one followed sister Tella, and her journey throughout another game of Caraval. I liked the setting of this one, in a new magical city, with even more dangers. Following her heart, Tella is relying on fate and a magical deck of cards to free her trapped mother, while balancing her conflicting feelings for certain characters. Readers see a more vulnerable side of Tella throughout the novel as she faces intimate dangers very close to her heart.

Beyond Tella, Scarlett's character grows, and you see a more daring side of Scarlett as the story progresses. At one point, I thought she was hiding details about Legend from Tella, but that is all apart of the story. The twists and turns in this novel I adored, and kept me guessing until the end. AND HELLO THAT CLIFF HANGER *wow* !!! I know that the third book in this series will be even more anticipated than this one!

The only thing that I did not love about this book, was the occasional naive decisions from Tella. They seemed childish, and forced. One or two confusing moments in the beginning also occurred, but beyond that, I adored it!

Blog Tour: Summer Constellations + US Giveaway

Hosted by Rockstar Book Tours

About the Book:

Title: SUMMER CONSTELLATIONS
Author: Alisha Sevigny
Pub. Date: May 1, 2018
Publisher: Kids Can Press
Formats: Hardcover, Paperback, eBook
Pages: 264

Find it: Amazon, B&N, TBD, Goodreads

Synopsis: Julia Ducharme is ready for a fresh start. Her little brother has finally recovered from a serious illness, and now she just wants to enjoy peak season at the campground her family owns. Maybe this will be the year her annual summer fling with Dan Schaeffer becomes something more?

But her summer dreams are quickly shattered. First, Dan arrives for vacation with a new girlfriend in tow, and then Julia discovers this may be her last summer in the only home she's ever known.

Crushing medical bills have brought her single mom to the brink of bankruptcy, and a wealthy developer is sniffing around the campground. He sees what Julia sees: lush woods, a pristine lake, miles of trails for adventure. Unlike Julia, he thinks this is the perfect spot for a casino resort.

Heartbroken and afraid, Julia looks to the stars for some perspective. Taking her telescope down to the dock one night, she has a chance encounter with a guitar-playing boy who offers some helpful advice. Too bad this handsome stranger is the developer's son, Nick Constantine.

As plans for a resort move forward, Julia is desperate to find a solution that doesn't mean leaving the lake. Nick, in turn, is desperate to separate himself from his father's aggressive business tactics. He promises that, together, they can thwart the sale. But can Julia trust him to conspire against his own father? And could she ever she trust him with her heart?

SUMMER CONSTELLATIONS is a story of lost summers, hidden treasure and love written in the stars. It is also a thoughtful reflection on what it means to love -- - and leave -- - one's childhood home.

Excerpt from the Novel:

“Do you want to get smacked?”

“What’d I say?” His laugh is throaty as he puts his hands lightly on my waist. My heart jumps, like a fish at dusk.

“Not by me.” I nod at the center of the lake. “Watch.” After a few seconds of silence, a large brown head appears, breaking the glassy tranquility of the water.

“What is that?” His breath is soft on my neck. “Some kind of hairy fish?”

A breathy laugh escapes. I turn to look up at him. “It’s a beaver.”

“You brought me all the way out here to check out a beaver? How incredibly romantic.” He grins down at me.

“That’s their lodge over there.” Suddenly shy, I turn back around and point to the middle of the lake. “The whole colony lives in it together.” One big happy beaver family.

“Cozy,” he murmurs, wrapping his arms around me.

“You want romantic? They are one of the few monogamous animals on Earth.” Another thing I’ve always admired about them.

Nick laughs. “Tell me some more sexy facts about beavers, Julia. I love it when you get all ranger girl on me. It’s hot.”

And I love it when he says my name. “I bet,” I croak. “So.” Clearing my throat, I attempt to calm my heart rate. “More sexy facts, hey? All right. Besides being busy bundles of energy who take exceptional care of their home, which I happen to find very sexy” — I glance sidelong at him — “they also secrete a chemical from their glands that smells like vanilla.”

“Just when I thought things couldn’t get any more risquΓ©,” Nick says. “How and why do you know that?”

“It’s used in natural flavoring. Generally, Mom doesn’t like Caleb and me to have any artificial flavors or colors,” I confide. “Red dye number seven, especially, makes him a little crazy.”

“I’ve never met someone with such a passion for beavers before.” The way he looks at me makes me nervous. But in a good way. Like a chaos-throughout- my-body way.

My throat is dry, my voice a whisper. “Did I mention they have transparent eyelids that act as goggles while they swim underwater?”

His voice lowers even more. “I don’t believe you did,” he says, mouth coming down to mine. I forget about the beavers.

My Review: 4.75/5 ⭐

This story followed Julia and her adventures on the family's campground home. But after finding out the overwhelming medical bills may lead to selling the property, and that her new found crush is the interested developer's son, Julia's heart, and her trust in others, are at risk.

I absolutely adored this novel. The characters were enjoyable to read about, and the setting was picturesque, perfect for a summer read. As Julia struggles to balance protecting her brother, her home, and her heart, she also learns to accept change, and discovers sometimes trusting a new relationship can have extraordinary outcomes. The supporting characters in this novel were so enjoyable. From the old summer fling to the new flamboyant girlfriend, I was amused throughout the novel. Her family struggles were relatable, and explained the hardships of families after illness in a realistic way. Not to mention Nick, who was the perfect guy for Julia from the beginning.

I appreciated the cute cabin setting, and I thought the lake grounds were described in great detail. Overall, I would definitely recommend this to any of my contemporary or romance fan friends. Alisha should be very proud of this novel.
